Neighborhood dog Bert stops by occasionally for a nap on our office sofa.

A dining table we built this spring, reclaimed barn wood top with a black analine dyed alder base.  This table was commissioned by our good friends at Terry Hurt Interior Design in Truckee, CA.

End tables/nightstands in solid walnut:

Friday, December 26, 2008

Some recent pieces we've been working on:

A pair of end tables, solid walnut.

A 4-drawer dresser, red alder.

I can't forget two of the most important members of the shop crew:

Polly Jean, part of our on site scrap wood recycling program.

Meeka enjoys modeling for photo shoots.

Some of the characters at the shop:

Nikos, furniture builder/mountaineer/two-wheeled nutcake, cutting some parts on the bandsaw.

Tony, furniture designer/builder/aspiring part-time hand model, cleaning up a resawn walnut board for a Mountain Modern writing desk.

1st post!

This is my first blog post (yeah I know, jumping right into the 2000's)...Mountain Modern is a sustainable furniture design/build studio located in the teeming metropolis of Salt Lake City, Utah, internationally recognized as a hotbed of up-and-coming design talent. I'll be posting pics of our furniture, works in progress and cool stuff going on at the shop.

First a little background: Mountain Modern was founded by me, Tony Church, and Donny Haynie about a year and a half ago. I've been designing and building furniture professionally for the last ten years (five of those with Tony Church Furniture+Design), Donny for the past eight.

We started Mountain Modern to focus on modern furniture built with sustainably harvested hardwoods, green materials like sunflower board and environmentally friendly waterborne laquers. We love modern design, but feel that a lot of mass produced modern furniture is lacking a human element, feeling like it was spit out of a CNC machine or thrown together by a ten year old Indonesian kid at the end of an 80 hour work week.

Our stuff is designed and built by skilled artisans, which results in a striking piece with individual character that's instantly recognizable and invites human interaction.
